Writer’s note: For those who have been reading this blog from its inception, some of the next parts of this serial might bear an uncanny resembelance to a previously removed story.  No, your eyes are not deceiving you.

Yonah walked back to his house, sure of himself for the first time in…in as long as he could really remember.  He wanted this for so long, but now felt confident in himself – he was sure that he was making the ‘right’ choice.  He dialed up a rebbi from one of the yeshivas that he had spent a large chunk of his seminal yeshiva days at.

Kisses goodnight were delicately applied to the cheeks of Yonah’s sleeping children before he himself decided to turn in for the night.

Lemkele was working on her laptop, drudging through her unending quota of bookkeeping requirements for the company she worked for via ‘conveniant’ telecommunication.

Books To Read, If You’re Not Learning

This entry is part 8 of 8 in the series Books To Read - If You're Not Learning

kurt-vonnegut

A lot of the works written by the late Kurt Vonnegut.  I include here his short story Harrison Bergeron, the surreal novel Breakfast of Champions, and his career-defining Slaughterhouse-Five.

Everyone knows about  Vonnegut.  What’s surprising to me, a little, is how some will (at first) say, when asked about him, “Oh ya, isn’t he the guy who wrote A Clockwork Orange,” or “interesting dude – he wrote Fahrenheit 451 [1], right?”

Okay, so Aaron was right, the place was a gay bar.  My original mis-impression was due (in part) to my original dealing with the bartender; the guy was straight as an arrow.  The signs of his masculinity were clear in every measurable way, add to that the enhancement that his plugged-in IPhone sitting next to the register provided the mild voyeur (me):  It’s screen-saver consisted of an attractive lady in provocative pose.

My Niece and I (Part 9)

Chavie’s sitting snugly in the vinyl back seat of my Altima in much the way I envision the infant Moses was when cruising down the Nile in his little ark.  She’s not quick with an answer, giving me both the opportunity to make her an offer (along with the considerable duty of delivering on whatever overture leaves my mouth).  My first two suggestions were vetoed by her, but the third one charmed her.

W/r/t the Political Spectrum of the U.S.

A.  Very much in line w/ the maxim of Chazal that “These & these are the words of our Living G-d” (meaning to say that it is possible for two seemingly mutually exclusive “truths” to exist, even though a resolution of diverging views might be above our level of comprehension), both the liberals inhabiting Ivory Tower Academia and the hawks that craft our militaristic stratagems might be ‘right.’

Book Store Update & More

A. The thing that everyone is telling me to do right now is: Write up a business plan explaining the purpose of the lounge.  This translates into scribing a long and drawn-out fleshing out of everything (really, everything) related to the idea.  I have a few issues with this.  Number one, I’m lazy.  In addition, writing up a plan seems like something of a catch-22 (to me), as there are plenty of things that I would theoretically bring to the business that may or may not be able to happen based on a whole set of intangibles.  So, basically, I will have to play chess, mapping out all the possibilities (that I can think of) of what the future might bring, and how my business will evolve based on such developments.  That can be enough to drive anyone a little nuts (especially a perfectionist like me), as the possibilities of what ‘might be’ are clearly endless.  I call out to you, dear reader: Do you have any experience re: writing up business plans?  If so, please do contact me – as it might help make my arduous assignment a wee bit easier.

I shrugged at Aaron and told him that I was going to head over to the bar for a refill.  He declined my offer to procure one for him as well, so I went over towards the back of the lounge with just my glass in hand.  I gave it to the bartender and patiently stood by the counter, awaiting my forthcoming Corona [1].  I took note of the fellow who was seated on a bar-stool to my immediate right, as he was loudly and nasally pontificating about something to a pal of his.  I allowed my right ear to voyeur on into his soliloquy.

beis_medrash

Yonah made his way back into the beis medrash, and re-sat himself across from Arnone, who was laughing like a hyena at his cellphone screen.  Text messaging, Yonah thought, those SMS devices are going to bring about the complete decay and collapse of civilizationI just don’t get the allure of it all, isn’t it easier to just call the person you’re texting up?
