A lot of the terms used in the posts on this site come from Semitic languages. This page attempts to translate them in order of where they appear on the blog. I’m starting with words from the My Niece and I story, in the order that they appear in said story:
Chavie -
Hebrew female name (translates into Hannah).
Shabbos -
Jewish Sabbath. Starts Friday evening, ends Saturday night.
Tatty -
Yiddish for ‘daddy.’
Erev Shabbos -
Sabbath Eve; essentially just means Friday.
Motzahey-Shabbos-Kodesh -
‘After the holy Sabbath’s conclusion’
Havdalah -
Post Sabbath blessing demarcating the Sabbath’s end, conducted with a cup of wine, a multi-wicked candle, and an aromatic spice. Traditionally recited together with one’s entire household.
Ma’ariv -
Evening prayers.
Uncle Moishy, MBD (Mordechai Ben David) -
Both are musical entertainers who sing Jewish songs. The former directs his music towards a child-aged audience; the latter towards an older demographic.
Shmiras Einayim -
In this context, the term essentially means modesty.
Rachmanus -
Mercy.
Hishtadlus -
Proper and expected quota of effort.
